On the morning of Thursday, 21st September 2023, the community gathered to bid farewell to Thomas Edwin Bowan, known affectionately to many as Ted, at Landican. With every pew occupied, the assemblage of friends, family, and acquaintances was a touching homage to the numerous bonds he had cultivated throughout his life.

Born in Rhyl on 23rd March 1931, Ted's life was a grand adventure filled with love, laughter, and the pursuit of the extraordinary. He traversed not only the landscapes of the world but navigated the rich terrains of human connection, leaving behind a trail of cherished memories and enduring relationships.

At his funeral, stories echoed of his warm-hearted nature, his adventurous spirit, and his unwavering support to those he held dear. As a loving husband to Jan, a devoted father, a proud grandfather (or Taid – Welsh for Grandad), Ted's life resonated with the richness of his relationships, reflecting the love he generously bestowed and reciprocally received.

The Memorial Service held later, provided a heartfelt space for those whose lives had been graced by Ted's presence. A cairn was constructed, stone by stone, each one carrying the weight of memories, love, and the essence of Ted's impactful journey. Friends and family shared tales of Ted’s adventures and his love for the outdoors, painting a vibrant portrait of a life fully embraced. The collective contribution to the cairn symbolized the many lives Ted touched, a sturdy testament to his meaningful existence.

The gathered throng then united their voices in singing "You'll Never Walk Alone," a resonant reminder of Ted's enduring influence and the unbroken connections shared in his memory. This profound moment of unity and celebration underscored the communal support and love enveloping everyone in attendance.

In honour of Ted, his family and friends, and the Wirral Unitarians extend deep gratitude to all who joined in celebrating the life of this remarkable man. His adventures may have reached their temporal end, but the stories, the love, and the inspiration Ted gifted the world will eternally echo through the mountains he adored, in the laughter of his loved ones, and in the silent, steadfast stones of the cairn.

Thomas Edwin Bowan’s spirit will continue to guide, uplift, and unite, a beacon of love and strength in the legacy he lovingly leaves behind.

May his soul rest in peace, and may all who hold Ted in their hearts find comfort in the shared memories and the enduring love that binds them together.
